A tile-maker in Provence
Atelier des Mousselieres Tiles from Provence

To make terracotta tiles the clays are first ground, sieved and moistened. They are then thoroughly kneaded to produce a heavy homogeneous paste that is soft and flexible.

The clay is then flattened in a long ribbon, and cut with a wire to make the tiles known as mechanical (the Rustic terracotta series, or the Tradition series of the enameled tiles).

The paste is stamped manually into wooden frames that are set directly on the ground, to make our handmade terracotta tiles. (The handmade Rustic series and the Antiquaire series of our terracotta products, and the Antiquaire and Patine series of our enameled tiles).

The tiles that are thus formed are then set to dry, naturally, by air, during several weeks.

After drying, the tiles are organized in frames and then put to bake for 10 hours at 1000 degrees C.
